AIRPORT INFORMATION

To get to Durham, you can fly into Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham, or London.

Newcastle Airport

To get to Durham from Newcastle Airport, Take the Metro from the airport to Central Station. The journey takes around 30 minutes. From Central Station, trains run to Durham Railway Station every 15-30mins depending on the time of day. The train takes between 10 to 15 minutes depending on the operator / number of intermediate stops. The total journey time from Newcastle Airport to Durham takes between 1 hour and 1 hour 20 mins.

Manchester Airport

For those travelling from Manchester airport, train tickets can be booked from Manchester Airport train station to Durham, with the total journey requiring 1 to 2 train changes, and taking around 3.5h. This service runs approximately once per hour.

Birmingham Airport

Durham can be reached by train from Birmingham airport, with the journey taking between 3 to 5 hours.

London Airports

Direct and indirect trains are available to Durham from London Kings Cross station, with the journey taking around 3 hours. Below is a summary of how to get to the station from the different airports around London

Heathrow: Take the Piccadilly line on the London Underground direct from the airport to London Kings Cross. This goes every 10 minutes. The Journey from Heathrow to London Kings Cross takes 1 hour.

Gatwick: There are direct trains to London St Pancras Station, London Kings Cross Station is across the street. Trains between Gatwick and St Pancras take around 50 minutes, and run every 10-20 minutes throughout the day.

Stansted: Take the Stanstead Express train from Stanstead Airport to Tottenham Hale Station, then take the London Underground to London Kings Cross Station. The train from Stansted goes every 15 minutes, and the underground goes every 2-7 minutes. The journey from Stansted to London Kings Cross takes 1 hour.
Alternatively, you can take a train from Stansted to Peterborough, then change for a train to Durham. This route takes around 4 hours, but does not go as often as the route through London.

Train

To get to Durham via train, it is possible to get the Eurostar train to London St Pancras International.

From London St Pancras, walk to the adjacent King's Cross Station (~100m walk), where there are both direct and indirect trains to Durham, running approximately every 30 minutes. The journey from London to Durham takes around 3 hours.

Ferry

DFDS operate daily ferries between Amsterdam and Newcastle. It departs Amsterdam at 17:30 each evening and arrives in Newcastle the next morning. It departs from Newcastle at 17:00 every evening and arrives in Amsterdam the next morning.

TRANSPORTATION AROUND DURHAM

Bus Services from Durham Railway Station

The Durham Railway Station is located at Station Approach, Durham DH1 4RB

The Durham Cathedral Bus Service runs two services which go directly from the station to the University, and costs £1 for a single ticket, or £1.50 for a return.

The 41 bus runs from the station to the Durham University Science Park in the mornings and evenings. The morning departure times are 8:05, 8:30, 9:05, and 9:30. The trip takes approximately 11 minutes when there is no traffic. It departs the University Science park in the evening at 17:03 and 17:33.

The 42 bus runs from the station to Mount Oswald, with the closest stops to the workshop location being either New Inn - Church Street if you wish to get to the Centre for Advanced Instrumentation, or you can request to stop at South Road Colleges, which is a short walk to the Mathematics building. The service departs the railway station at 10 and 40 minutes past the hour, starting at 7:40 and finishing at 17:40. The service departs New Inn Church Street at 18 and 48 past the hour, starting at 7:48 and finishing at 17:48.

The Durham Bus and Coach Station is a short walk down the hill from the railway station, and provides ample alternatives to travel to the university.

The Durham Bus and Coach Station is located at North Road, Durham DH1 4SG.

From the Station, the following bus services travel in the direction of the University

To get to the Department of Mathematical Sciences, the closest stop for the number 6 bus is South Road Colleges. You can then walk along Hollingside lane to get to the building. For all other buses, the closest stop is University - Palatine Centre. You can then walk alone Rose St to get to the Maths building.

For those travelling to the Ogden Centre West, the closest stop is New Inn - Church Street. Any of the above buses will go to this stop from the city centre.

For those travelling to the Hub in Mount Oswald, take the 42 bus directly there, or take the number 6 bus to the South Road stop. The hub is then a 5-minute walk away.
